Dog Figurines Key Terms

There are many terms that apply to figurines. Following are a few:

Casting: The pouring of fluid ceramic or metal into a preformed mold.

Mold: Preformed tool to hold poured material.

Blank: The hardened product straight from the mold.

Towing: The cleaning of the mold marks before decorating and glazing.

Sculpting: The use of tools on the "blank" to achieve "character"

Pediment: The base for a figurine or statue.

Curing Time: The length of time fluid ceramic material spends in a mold before it can be handled.

Three-Piece Molding, X-Piece Molding: The number of different elements that make up the finished figurine. For example, upraised arms are cast separately.

Resolution: The overall artistic effect achieved by combining the sculpting and painting to enhance detail.

Cores: Withdrawable portions of the mold, enabling such intricacies as circles in suspension to be produced.
